Once an exclusive haven for the early discoverers of the simple secrets of the Caribbean, the nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti now plays host to large numbers of tourists, particularly from Europe, drawn to its superb beaches and luxurious hotels with their promise of a perfect setting for rest and relaxation.
The Dominican Republic has many resort towns such as Puerto Plata, Boca Chica and La Romana with great beaches, reefs to explore and the sunken galleons offshore. The locals love a party, which is apparent from the many festivals, parties and carnivals that can be found throughout the Dominican Republic. Santo Domingo has two Carnivals complete with parades, floats, live music and dancing in the streets.
Passing through the streets of the Dominican Republic on any night, visitors might notice the handmade posters that hang from telephone poles promoting a forthcoming merengue or bachata night at a nearby venue. Continue walking and it doesn't take long to realise that music acts as the soundtrack of the country and its people, often heard emanating from vehicles, stores, restaurants and houses. After sunset, the pulsing beats fill the air with life and draw locals and tourists alike toward the crowded dance floors of the world's hottest dance clubs. A way of life on the island, Dominicans view dancing as an art and take enormous pride in sharing their native movements with others. Salsa, Latin jazz and other types of dance music can also be heard in the country, but are not as popular as their beloved merengue and bachata counterparts.
The development of the coasts has resulted in the remnants of any relics of colonial times being eclipsed. The traveller must journey further afield from the dazzling resorts to discover such monuments as the 16th century castle of Don Diego Colon and the quaint Spanish architecture of some of the homes and churches of that period which are visible in the area in and around Santo Domingo. As the oldest city in the New World, it features the first cathedral, first university and first hospital of the Americas. There are six regions, with beautiful contrasting landscapes of rolling mountains, lush jungles, pine forest, coral reefs, unspoiled beaches and arid desert. The central region includes the towns of Santiago and La Vega as well as the stunning Cordillera Central mountain ranges and the Cibao Valley. Blessed with rich soil and abundant natural resources, this region regularly attracts nature lovers, cigar connoisseurs and adventurers. The East Coast is home to one of the emerging eco-resorts, Bayahibe, where tourist accommodation co-exists with a local fishing community, and beaches have been recognised as outstanding in their maintenance of high standards of water quality, safety and as sites for educational and environmental projects. It serves also as a base for hikers bound for the Parque Nacional del Este and its fascinating collection of caves dating from pre-Columbian time. Water enthusiasts flock to the beaches of the North Coast to take advantage of the perfect windsurfing, kiteboarding and surfing conditions, and golfers here and throughout the island are delighted by the quality of the courses.
