Consisting of two main islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and 21 smaller islands including Chacachacare, Monos, Huevos, Gaspar Grande and Little Tobago, this is one of the only English-speaking Caribbean countries which is primarily industrialised and as famous for its Carnival as for being the birthplace of steelpan, calypso, soca and limbo. Originally a leper colony Chacachacare now with Monos, Huevos and Gasparee have weekend hideaways known as Down D Islands for rich Trinis some of which are available to rent through this very site
It is the wonderful cosmopolitan mix of cultures that distinguishes Port of Spain, Trinidad’s capital, from other Caribbean cities. The neat Victorian houses of its gridded streets are rich with traces of African and Indian influences along with evidence of some of its other thriving minorities: Chinese, Portuguese, British, Lebanese, Spanish and Amerindian. The Indian culture and community present here date back to the time when indentured servants were brought from the Asian subcontinent a century ago. Rivalling even the explosion of colour and music that is the local carnival, one of the biggest popular celebrations is in fact Divali, the Hindu festival of lights, during which walls, gardens and windowsills are garlanded with small terracotta lanterns. Another legacy of the ethnic diversity that you will encounter in Trinidad is the sumptuous culinary fare on offer in an abundance of restaurants and bars, and increasingly popular food festivals. Flavours of India, Africa, China, Syria and Europe have combined to create a distinctive Trinidadian taste. Typical local dishes include curried conch, creole fish or stewed oxtail, with vegetable dishes such as callaloo, fried plantains or breadfruit.
Carnival though is what everyone knows Trinidad for. Jouvert morning 2am Jouvert bands meet dressed in cheap devil costumes. Free drinks till day break. 2 Hours later its Carnival 1000s of semi naked women hotly pursued by 1000s of semi naked men march down the streets to the latest Soca music drinking free drinks. Fall Asleep on yourself. Wake, Repeat on Shrove Tuesday before falling asleep at Maracas Beach for Ash Wednesday Cool Down!
Tobago, which has the concentration of the luxury holiday resorts, has all the essential ingredients of a dream holiday destination. The centre of commerce, port and capital city of Tobago is Scarborough, the perfect base from which to explore the 10,000 hectares of rich rainforest habitat in the centre of the island with the tremendous biodiversity that has led to its classification as a Ramsar site. You will find here 450 bird species, 108 types of mammals, 55 reptiles, 25 amphibians and 620 types of butterflies. Favourite destinations for eco-enthusiasts are the Grafton Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary and the Bon Accord Wetlands. From March to August, endangered and protected giant leatherback turtles come ashore to the place of their birth to dig nests and lay their eggs. They can be carefully observed on protected beaches such as Englishman’s Bay, Turtle Beach and Stonehaven Bay. Pigeon Point is rumoured to be the most photographed beach in the Caribbean, along with Store Bay are the most popular in Tobago.
If your love of nature is confined more to the appreciation of a scene of palms, turquoise waters and shimmering white sands, taken in from a horizontal position suspended in a hammock, then both Trinidad and Tobago can offer the more laid-back visitor a series of incredible beaches. Try Store Bay, Pigeon Point and Englishman’s Bay on Tobago, or Maracas Bay, Paria Bay and Blanchisseuse on Trinidad. Many have good facilities including life guards, changing rooms and snack bars. Trinidad also plays host to several exciting international fishing tournaments including the Kingfish Tournament in June, Tarpon Bash in August and Wahoo Tournament in early March.
By night, Trinidad is a great place to dance the night away, either in trendy clubs such as those in Port of Spain 51 or Zen, Arima, San Fernando and Chaguanas, or at festivals such as the Pan Jazz in De Yard and the Steelpan Jazz Festival. On Tobago, the music scene is massive, and in April, the Tobago Plymouth Jazz Festival attracts stars the quality of Sting, Diana Ross and Elton John.
